FOIL Method is Distributive Law

The FOIL method is not really bad for teaching multiplication of two binomials as long as it is derived from applying the distributive law or more officially known as the Distributive Property (over addition or subtraction).

The FOIL method is a mnemonic for First term, Outer term, Inner Term, Last term. It means multiply the first terms of the factors, then the outer terms, then the inner terms and the last terms. I would suggest the following sequence of examples before the teacher introduces product of two binomials:
Simplify the following expressions
1.       3(2x-1)
2.      3x(2x-1)
3.      -3x(2x-1)
4.      (x+3)(2x-1)

Play the video for complete description of how to teach this with meaning.

 Remember:
In multiplying binomials, you can use any of this two (distributive law or FOIL method). We discuss FOIL method to make it simple, but it's up to you whether you use distributive law or FOIL method, it's the same. Just use the method that you are comfortable and confident with.

7 komento:

  1. I am using FOIL method in multiplying binomials. At first, I am confused what is FOIL means? How can you determine if is the first, outer, inner and last terms? But instead of complaining, i keep on practicing until i get the procedure.

  2. This is great, if you are getting a hardtime in memorizing. Once you know that you can multiply binomials by simply applying the distributive law, you don't need to memorize what FOIL means. But if you want to make your solutions short, use the foil method instead.

  3. Why do we keep on making math hard if we can make it simple? All we need is more practice. Knowing the FOIL method in multiplying binomials makes my solving simple, I don't need to use the distributive law at all. Once i know the rule in using FOIL method and more practice with it, I can surely get a high score in an exam.

  4. Seriously? I don't know that FOIL method is simply the distributive law. I remember my high school days when I keep on memorizing what is the meaning of FOIL, but if i know that it is simply the distributive law maybe i can get a high score that time.

  5. I am having a hard-time in memorizing, but using foil method instead of the distributive law makes my math simple. In math, practice is the key to success.

  6. Thank you Ma'am Donna for this blog, i really don't know that FOIL method is just the distributive law. I am using FOIL method ever since, but I didn't have a hard time because i keep on practicing this method in multiplying binomials.

  7. Mathematics is not that actually hard, there are some topics that are surely easy, like this one. Multiplying binomials is hard at first but using FOIL method makes it easier. It's easy if you know the rules, and have a lot of practice. In mathematics your number one enemy is the time, that's why I am using FOIL method instead of the distributive law because this method makes your solving easy and short.
